The film grossed $8 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing sound film of its time. Due to its success, it was re-released in theaters many times, and was first released on video in the 1990s.

The main characters are Sheriff Woody, a toy cowboy (Hanks), and Buzz Lightyear, a toy astronaut (Allen).
